The Pros and Cons of Buying Used Cars for Sale by Owner

Looking to buy a used car?  If so, you have a decision to make.  Do you want to buy a used vehicle from a dealership or a car being sold by the owner?  Used cars for sale by owner sound nice, but they do have their pros and cons.  What are they?

The Pros

The Costs:  Lets get one thing out of the way right now; you are going to notice three things.  First, some sellers are asking what the Kelley Blue Book recommends.  Second, some sellers are going to ask for less because they want to get rid of the car and now.  Third, you are going to find some sellers who are asking for more than what the Kelley Blue Book recommends.  Why?  They either need to payoff the auto loan first or just see dollar signs in their eyes.  Despite the possibility of a variance, most cars for sale by owner do present a good deal for the buyer.

Repairs Not Always Made:  In a minute, you will notice that this same reason is also listed as a con to buying used cars for sale by owner.  Why?  Because it works both ways.  A used car dealer is more likely to perform all repairs before placing the vehicle for sale.  An owner?  Not so much likely.  The individuals who benefit from this (they have more power to negotiate a lower selling price) are those who are familiar with vehicles and those who can perform all repairs themselves, much cheaper.

No Over-the-Top Selling:  Of course used cars for sale by owner sellers want to make a sale.  The difference is their job rarely depends on you saying “yes.”  Although you are likely to get a sales pitch, you aren’t going to be bombarded with one.  Say no at a dealership and you will likely get “are you sure” or “well come look at this car instead.”  When dealing with a seller, you are likely to get “okay, well thanks; have a nice day.”

The Cons

Can Be Harder to Find:  It is no secret that individuals (whether it be car owners or home owners) don’t market their items for sale as good as a professional does.  This means it might be harder to find used cars for sale by owner.  With that said, here are a few suggestions.  Check classified websites, for sale by owner websites, your local newspaper’s auto section, and be on the lookout for cars with for sale signs by the side of the road.

Repairs Not Always Made:  When a dealer sells a used car, they know that making a few simple upgrades and repairs can increase the value of that vehicle.  That is why these repairs and upgrades are often made.  This often means no or less hassle for you.  There is no need to get a repair cost estimate, add the estimate to the overall price of the car, and so forth.  You should have a nice vehicle that is road-ready.

Looking for Used Cars for Sale by Owners

Don’t know where to start looking for used cars for sale by owners? This is a topic that confuses a large number of car shoppers. Shoppers have realized, or captured on the perception that owner listed cars tend to do their budget a favor, or may you want to call it savings.

Well, this can be as close or as far as you want from the truth. For sale by owner, also called private sellers do not have to compensate for wages, rent, and utilities, as apposed to dealers that factor in all their expenses into the sticker price of the car. I apologize to morally ethical dealers, as is plenty of them in your local area, however, the immoral ones lead to such introduction, and make it necessary

Local Used Cars for Sale by Owner

Local used car for sale by owner is a term that comes up on the mind of every person that’s in the market looking for his or her next car. The perception is that for sale by owner is always a money saver. This assumption would be very true if the right research is done, and on the contradictory this statement may be your worst enemy, and my lead the car may end up costing you a whole lot more if the homework was to be ignored. Hence, there are some dealers and individuals that have no sympathy for negligent shoppers when it comes to the aftermath of selling a car.

I will focus this article on used cars for sale by owners, and will dedicate a whole chapter of tips and hints to smart shopping at dealerships. Hence, private sellers don’t have to pay employees, lot rental and all the other costs associated with running a car dealership. This allows used cars for sale by owner to cost less than an identical car at a dealership.

When approaching private sellers you should always think that just like you are looking for your best interest they are too. So, in other words, it doesn’t hurt to ask questions, but you should always use the services provided to public to double check the information provided. Carfax is a report that provides you with information pertaining to accidents that car have been in, and major mechanical problems were fixed. Furthermore, the best advise I can give you is hat have the seller provide you with a report from a brand name mechanical shop, stating the car conditions. And based on the report, you could then associate the car with one of three conditions, fair, good, or excellent. Once you have decided the condition of the car, you could then visit KBB for a very accurate fair market listing.

Used cars for sale by owners are listed in Nemours marketing channels. Start with your local newspapers, get an idea of what’s out there, then browse some trade magazines, and last but not least with the power of the internet, you are a click away from Craiglist.org, and eBay. keep in mind that all mentioned methods charge to list a car, and the more they list the larger their profit going to be. Browse the internet for websites that do not charge money to list the cars, and better yet, look for those that provide free consultation and tips to the buyers. The way these types of websites operate allows them to profit from buyers visiting their site, as appose to sellers listing their cars.

Last but not least, keep in mind that asking price does not equal the final out of pocket value. After buying the car, you would have to pay tax license registration and most importantly initial preventive maintenance (oil changes, fluid flushes etc.). Each of the factors will be discussed in details in articles that are dedicated to it.

On a concluding note, Local used car for sale by owner is a term that could be your best dream, or worst nightmare. It all depends on your level of awareness of the cars’ history, and the amount of basic research you do.
